Our vision of creating a fairer, better world drives us to support organisations that nurture sporting excellence, inspire through the arts, communicate the news and entertain us.
Culture, media and sport play a huge role in shaping the identity of the UK and the way it is perceived around the world.
The UK Government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport tells us that culture contributed just under £35bn to the UK economy in 2019, which means that cultural industries were worth around 1.8% of the nation’s GDP that year. That’s a 27% real-terms increase since 2010.
Sport England estimates that sport and physical activity contribute even more - around £39bn - to the UK economy. The sector boosts the economy directly, through job and wealth creation, and indirectly, by reducing healthcare costs and crime.
The UK media sector adds a further £5bn each year to the UK economy and that’s projected to rise at a rate of more than 7% over the coming four years.
These are hugely significant and successful sectors for the UK, not just in terms of their monetary value, but also due to the high profile they enjoy both in the UK and throughout the world.
Culture, media and sport organisations have the power to enrich lives and bind communities together.
GGI appreciates the value they bring to the life of local communities and the UK as a whole. And no one understands as well as we do the important role governance has to play in maximising and sustaining the positive impact these sectors have on society.
