GGI Newsletter - 4 December 2020
Our integrated care breakfast webinar series continued this week with a session on Wednesday looking at the role of anchor organisations in the successful integration of services. GGI’s Mark Butler introduced the session, which was chaired by Professor Eileen Fairhurst, chair of East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and attended by more than 60 people. Mark’s presentation prompted a wide-ranging discussion that touched on the need for more humility from the NHS, the importance of trust, and – perhaps most challenging of all – the prospect of voluntarily giving up power in the interests of the communities we serve.

Our integrated care breakfast webinar series continued this Wednesday with a session looking at the economics of population health. In her overview of the topic our guest speaker, Jacque Mallender, director, Economics by Design, outlined some of the challenges associated with population health economics, including the difficulties associated with demonstrating the effectiveness of investments, the time it can take for these investments to reap benefits, and the disconnect between their economic value and their affordability.

The challenge facing the NHS was starkly set out in a 2018 report from the HFMA and PWC, which included the following: “The way the NHS financial system currently works is simply not aligned with place or outcomes-based care. Today the care system and the way that money moves around it is in a messy no-man’s land with a chaotic and bewildering array of financial mechanisms in place.“
