Andrew founded GGi in 2009. He is well-known as a leading thinker and commentator on modern governance and a practical facilitator and coach to boards across the public and third sectors. His leadership of GGi is associated with developing a mature understanding of the challenges facing boards in the modern world.
His previous roles have included director of the in-house national NHS accreditation unit Health Services Accreditation, director of development at the King’s Fund Health Quality Service, international consultant at the Cape Town NGO COHSASA and deputy director of the Humana Commissioning Institute.
Heavily influenced by the work of Judge Professor Mervyn King, Andrew sits on the board of the Johannesburg-based Good Governance Academy, which is working to influence the curricula of business schools and universities globally. And in 2020, he became a Salzburg Global Fellow for his work promoting good governance as a means of creating social value, securing a prosperous future that is better and fairer for all.
Andrew collaborated with Mervyn King to develop GGi's insight into impactful governance and board effectiveness. He developed GGi's review methodology and our thinking on risk appetite, which has now become the industry standard for the NHS.
Andrew specialises in complex governance issues and board development. His more noteworthy assignments at GGI include special circumstances governance reviews and investigations at Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS FT, and Mid and South Essex NHS FT.
He has led review and development assignments with NHS England, Social Work England, the World Health Organisation, the Royal College of Art, the Royal Ballet School, the Glasgow School of Art, and many NHS trusts, integrated care boards, regulators, arm's-length bodies, universities and charities.
Outside GGI, Andrew is a visiting professor at the Institute of Health at the University of Cumbria. He also has a strong interest in opera – he has been a trustee of the International Opera Awards since 2023 – and in developing a broader audience for this unique art form. He lives in Sussex, in the house where he was born.
