What makes a great non-executive director? | 10 May

Date: 10 May 2024

Time: 10.00 – 11.00

Location: Virtual, Zoom

As part of its mission to promote good governance, GGI has been hosting facilitated virtual meetings to give NHS non-executive directors an opportunity to share their concerns, challenges and ideas as we rethink the future of health and social care.

The goal is to collectively think about the role NEDs play as part of the controlling mind of their organisations, to discuss immediate safeguarding issues, and to ensure we all learn from this experience to assure better outcomes for citizens in the future.

The event on Friday 10 May at 10.00-11.00 will address the question: What makes a great non-executive director?

One thing would be what is a real art for non-executives: getting the best from their executives. Also important would be securing the trust and respect that will allow the candour, and helping the executives to be open to new ideas and avoid groupthink.

The webinar will look at the range of non-executive skills and contributions, and will cover issues such as making a whole career of experience in one industry and then making this useful in another, and building a great board team that adds value.

There's so much on the agenda for non-execs, ranging from the inevitable shortage of resources to known issues ahead such as the assisted dying legislation.

Non-executives are critical to the NHS, and former chief executive of the NHS and Permanent Secretary at the Department of Health Sir David Nicholson will lead the discussion, drawing on his executive and non-executive experience.

This meeting is by invitation only and is open to all NHS non-executive directors, chairs and associate non-executive directors of NHS providers. Others may attend by special invitation. For further details, comments, questions and suggestions please contact: events@good-governance.org.uk.
