Darren Grayson

Executive Director

After working in the NHS for almost 30 years, including 14 as a chief executive of three primary care trusts, an acute trust and an integrated acute and community trust, Darren joined GGI in 2017, first as a special adviser and from 2019 as an executive partner.

In his NHS career, Darren worked in health authorities and trusts in Yorkshire, Oxfordshire, Kent, Surrey and Sussex and also had a stint as a director in a strategic health authority, as well as undertaking project work with the Department of Health and the No10 Delivery Unit.

As a chief executive of commissioning and providing trusts Darren led and delivered large scale strategic change programmes across acute, community and mental health services that delivered safer and more sustainable services for patients and taxpayers. He has a track record of tackling seemingly intractable problems with service safety and of delivering sustainable solutions. Darren’s NHS experience has given him a highly developed understanding of and feeling for how good governance can deliver improved performance in organisations and critically across health and care systems.

At GGI Darren has worked with boards to improve their performance and helped them build their capacity and capability to lead the transformation of their organisations. He also leads quality governance improvement programmes for trusts as well as for commissioning organisations. Darren’s work often involves providing developmental support and acting as a trusted advisor to chief executives and others in senior leadership positions in the NHS and in public and voluntary sector organisations. He is an expert in delivering Well Led developmental reviews for NHS trusts that enable them to make rapid improvements in preparation for inspections.

Darren’s NHS clients have included Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, London Northwest University Healthcare NHS Trust, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust, the South East Region of NHSIE, Health Education England and several CCGs including Birmingham and Solihull, South Warwickshire, Greenwich and Dudley.

His work in ICSs and provider collaboratives development has included Birmingham and Solihull, Surrey Heartlands and Cornwall. His non-NHS clients have included Nottingham City Care, Aviva Health, Simplycare, DMC Healthcare, the St Mary’s Hospice and the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Darren has a bachelor’s degree, a master’s, a post-graduate diploma in health services management and is a graduate of the NHS Top Leaders programme.

Outside work Darren has a busy home life with his wife, four children, three dogs and two allotments but he also finds the time to be an occasional rugby coach and pursue his keen interest in politics.
