Biography
With 25 years as a registered nurse in the NHS, James has developed and led a wide range of portfolios in acute hospitals. As director of nursing at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust since February 2016, he leads across a wide-ranging and wholly quality focused agenda.
An early adopter of mortality review techniques, James linked practice with quality governance expertise to lead a range of improvements. Leading the trust legal services function, he is driving the process of learning and prevention with the development of a safety and learning clinical fellows programme supported by NHSR.
As a chief nursing information officer (CNIO), James drives the adoption of digital systems, building resilience and safety in services while releasing clinical staff time.
He also leads a multi-professional workforce hub centred on delivering the right staff, with the right skills. Linking digital and governance abilities this work triangulates clinical, quality outcome and acuity data to inform decisions.
James recently began a part-time secondment within the North East London Acute Alliance & STP to advance temporary staffing provision. He has a clear ambition to see an NHS-led multi-professional collaborative staff bank across London which delivers for staff and providers equally.
James is also a member of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) technology appraisal committee, which assesses, considers and interprets evidence on the clinical effectiveness and cost effectiveness of health technologies and is at the forefront introducing new, safe and innovative technologies to the NHS.
