Biography
Deborah has been a non-executive director at South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust since January 2018. She is also a council member for a healthcare regulator and a trustee of Princess Alice Hospice.
Her experience as a non-executive director, chair and trustee spans numerous sectors, including health and social care, the third sector, statutory regulators, the arts and education.
Until October 2020, Deborah was Deputy Principal (Institutional Affairs) and Professor of Bioethics, Clinical Ethics and Medical Law at St. George's University of London, where she was also an executive board member with institutional responsibility for organisational culture and development, governance and quality, partnerships and equality, diversity and inclusion.
She now enjoys a portfolio career comprising organisational consultancy, non-executive and advisory roles, broadcasting and writing. She has written widely about medical ethics and leadership in academic and popular publications, including The Guardian, The Times, Times Higher Education, and British Medical Journal. She also works as a broadcaster, particularly for radio, including as a presenter of Test Case and Patient Undone and as a regular panellist and programme consultant to Inside the Ethics Committee, all for BBC Radio 4.
Other roles include acting as chair of the General Medical Council’s review of its consent guidance, being a member of the London Police Ethics Panel and a panel chair for the United Council of Psychotherapy. In 2017 she was awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List for services to medical ethics.
