Michael Wood joined GGI originally as Director of Corporate Affairs in 2013 following a successful career in the University sector where he occupied senior executive roles, combined with the duties of Secretary to the Board of Governors and Company Secretary over many years. Heading up the growing GGI Education Practice, Michael was made a Partner during 2014.
Michael uses this hands-on extensive experience to help academic institutions match the regulatory requirements with their strategic governance needs and is currently working with three of the UK’s largest universities. Michael also sits on a research advisory board working with a consortium of 30 further education colleges looking at innovative governance.
Most recently, Michael held a senior position at King’s College London’s School of Medicine, working closely with King’s Health Partners (the largest healthcare consortium in Europe) and Guy’s & St Thomas’ Foundation Trust, with particular responsibility for the areas of translational research, community education, primary care and public health.
Michael’s knowledge of university governance matters (across a wide spectrum of institutions) is very substantial, therefore, having worked with Boards on governance systems and structure reviews, in addition to development and improvement strategies. He has also devised induction programmes for new Governors, and produced self-assessment tools and governance handbooks and is fully conversant with HE Codes of Governance.
Michael maintains close links with HEFCE and other regulators to ensure the latest insights on governance thinking are considered at national levels.
As part of his MBA research investigation at the University of Edinburgh, Michael specialised in organisational culture and behaviour and he continues to research this area.
